Friends of Centre is a street activation project focused on creating “The Most Age-Friendly Street in Calgary.”
This community project emerged as an opportunity to reimagine the future of a street that was inhospitable to seniors and the community. With missing sidewalk links, a lack of crosswalks, and dangerous slopes, the street needed to be redesigned as a place where everyone could get around safely and access the amenities of the neighbourhood.
Through a series of conversations with neighbours, observations and data gathering about the use of the street, and interviews with seniors we developed a street activation plan. The activation plan leveraged grant funding and City of Calgary partnerships to demonstrate what an Age-Friendly Street could look like and led to a long-term plan for street redesign.
